Penn & Teller at the Eventim Apollo

I love going to the theatre and I don’t get to go nearly enough. I have been a couple of times this year though and my most recent trip was to see Penn & Teller at the Eventim Apollo. When John realised that they were performing in London, he figured things out with work so I could go with my sister and her fiance and he would have a few days with Erin at home.

I have seen Penn & Teller on television for as long as I can remember, way back to when they had cameo roles in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Magic fascinates me because I never know how things are done… unless Penn & Teller reveal the secrets of a certain trick.

As soon as we got into the lobby we were all very excited. There was a sign telling everyone to take a cup and four different cards for something later on in the show. I have to say, I was very picky about the cards I chose and made sure I had one of each suit. The trick they did with these cards was just spectacular. I obviously won’t go into detail about what it was or what the result was. However, I will say that I am baffled at how it was done and I don’t think I’ll ever understand it.

The whole show lasted about 2 and a half hours with a 20 minute interval in the middle. There was no real theme to the show and Penn & Teller went from one trick to another which not much space in between. There was obvious prop changes but these never took long and we were never kept waiting for more. What I like about Penn & Teller is that they are comedians as well as magicians so the show is super funny. Along with the jokes and magic, there is story telling and history of some magicians and tricks, which I thought was really interesting.

As exciting and amazing as the actual show was, the best bit was right at the end. As soon as the show finished, Penn & Teller ran out of the theatre and we didn’t know where they had gone. As we excited we saw a big crowd. I very sneakily snuck us down the side of this crowd, against the security barrier, and got to the very front. In just a couple of minutes my sister and I were having this picture taken. Penn was so incredibly polite and patient and genuinely lovely. I wish we could have waited to get a picture with Teller too but we would have been there a long time. This picture has made my whole year at the moment.

If Penn & Teller are ever in the UK performing again, I would definitely recommend going to see them. I know I will be!
