Playing with an 8 month old

Playing with an 8 month old

Erin is turning 8 months old in a couple of days. She has changed so much in the past couple of weeks. One thing I have noticed more than anything is what she is and isn’t interested in any more. I’ve also realised that playing with an 8 month old is hard!

Erin has loads of toys. She always has done. We’re very lucky that there is a children’s charity shop around the corner from where we live. We manage to pick up new toys for only 30p-50p a time so Erin has been a bit spoiled.

Just recently it seems that Erin has outgrown the rattles and musical instruments she loved so much. Now that Erin is 8 months old she is sitting up on her own and attempting to crawl. Every day she wants to do more and more, especially on her own. I can’t believe what an independent little girl she is becoming.

These changes have caused a bit of confusion for me. As a first time parent I struggle to know what to do with Erin sometimes. What used to keep her entertained or occupied for ages may only do so for 10 minutes, if at all. It has been harder just recently as most of the classes we go to normally have stopped for the summer holidays.

I managed to get a couple of new toys for her recently but she’s not quite ready for them yet. The shape sorters are a bit too advanced for her and all she can really do is pick up the shapes. She doesn’t find them fun yet like with her older toys. We seem to be in the middle of age ranges when it comes to toys.

Playing

Luckily, Erin does still enjoy playing upstairs with her sensory basket. The difference now though is that she can take everything out of the basket herself! She couldn’t do this until she began sitting up on her own and now she find it all really interesting!

Playing

Erin is also teething. For the past 2 weeks she has wanted something in her mouth constantly. This also makes playing difficult because she wants to have a teether as well as doing something esle. While in Boots over the weekend I did manage to find a couple of bits from Nuby and Erin seems to love them.

The only thing I know Erin loves at the moment is her Jumperoo! We don’t let her stay in this for too long each day and we don’t use it too much though. Erin would bounce in that thing for hours if she could!

I would love some ideas on games to play or things to do with Erin at this age. I feel a bit stuck for another month or two until she can either crawl or do a lot more with her hands.

  1. Way to go Erin, she is adorable. The teething stage is horrid for them but plenty of chewy toys or jewellery will help, especially if they have been chilled in the fridge. How about some sensory boxes filled with different things to stimulate the senses? Sand, rice, pasta, toys, feathers, poms, that sort of thing. Jack loved it x

  2. I’m afraid I can’t remember that age so much! Does she go to Baby Group? What I remember from T is the crawling around so much and that I couldn’t leave her alone anymore 😉 Oh and sorry to hear that Erin is teething right now. Now I remember how horrible that was, hopefully it will be over soon. x

  3. This is such a fun age where you can really start playing with them and they start interacting more with the world. Aw, I almost miss it! My eldest is 16 and my youngest is 7, so it’s been awhile since they’ve been babies. Enjoy it! 🙂
