Storytime Saturday: Captain Pug by Laura James

Unfortunately, Storytime Saturday has been a bit hit and miss since I started the feature. However, this week it’s back and I’m reviewing a Captain Pug by Laura James.

Captain Pug: The Dog Who Sailed The Seas. What a title! This is the first in a brand new illustrated series so future books will focus on Pug doing different things! I jumped at the chance to be able to review this book.

Pug is going on a seafaring adventure. He’s had jam tarts for breakfast. He’s wearing a smart sailor suit. There’s just one problem. Pug is afraid of the water!

From the very first page, it is clear that Pug is quite the character. Waking up his owner, Lady Miranda, with his little doggy breath is a funny way to start the story.

The little details really matter to me in books like this and I think this one has loads going for it. The text is a nice size, meaning little eyes can see it well. Some words though are different sizes, fonts and even shapes to the others though and I loved this.

I think children will pay attention to changes like this. This really makes certain parts of the story stand out!

The illustrations are also wonderful. Pug himself is obviously really cute, especially in his little sailor outfit. The pictures are really well placed too. The placement changes on each page so there is always somewhere different to look at.

The story is really funny and I think children will really enjoy it. I know I enjoyed it!

Although Captain Pug is aimed at children ages 5-7 I have no problem reading this to Erin. At the minute, just likes being read to and listens to my voice no matter what the book is. However, this book is so cute and fun. It has now got a place on Erin’s bookcase and we will continue to read it over and over again.

  1. I love kids’ books especially when the illustrations are nice and this seems like a really cute story. The fact that he is afraid of the water is a nice little touch:)
