Storytime Saturday: A Busy Day for Birds

Storytime Saturday a weekly blog feature showcasing any new books we’ve been reading with Erin, reviewing picture books and talking about our monthly library haul! Basically, Storytime Saturday is all about books! This week we’re talking about A Busy Day for Birds by Lucy Cousins. It was published by Walker Books on 2nd February 2017.

A busy day for birdsFlap your wings, fly up high, open your beak and sing in this fun action rhyme story about fantastical birds by multi-award-winning author Lucy Cousins. “Can you imagine … just for one day … you’re a busy bird? Yes, a bird! Hooray!” Can you stand on one leg like a flamingo or waddle like a penguin? How about say “cock-a-doodle-doo!”, “tuwit-tuwoo” and even “tra-la-la”? What a busy day you will have! A bouncy read-aloud book to be enjoyed; beautifully illustrated with bold, bright colours and packed with all sorts of wild and wonderful birds!

A busy day for birdsBirds are funny creatures and there are many different kinds and a lot of them act very differently. A Busy Day for Birds is all about the different kinds of birds and certain things that different species do!

In this book children can learn what chickens do, how penguins walk and what is so special about peacocks. It’s all done is a lovely, simple way that is engaging at the same time. Each bird comes with a little bit of text explaining but the text is really big and bold so it’s easy to read.

As you can see from the picture of the cover, it is very bright. The whole book is like this and I love it. Each page is so bright and colourful and it would be impossible to ignore this book. This is one for the younger children for sure as each page is sure to capture their attention. One of my favourites is the bright red page for the orstrich!

Erin is obsessed with this book because of how colourful it is! I’m a big fan myself.

I like Lucy Collins’ other book, always fun and colourful 🙂 We read together 2 books each night (guess it will go up to 3 when Zach starts choosing one too!), it’s so important to have some quiet together time at the end of a busy day.

What a lovely idea to explore books from such an early age. Long may it continue! We are big book lovers in our house.
