Erin’s Terrible Tantrums

Okay, so maybe the tantrums are not as terrible as the title may make it sound.

Erin is now 9 months old and has somehow learned how to throw a bit of a tantrum. I have absolutely no idea how babies or children learn this.

Just recently Erin has started to get really upset and annoyed if I tell her she can’t have something or take something away from her. It could even be because I’m trying to feed her, or if the food has run out! The biggest one at the minute is because I won’t let her chew on my new necklace!

I know there is probably no real way of stopping your child from throwing a tantrum but god, I hope Erin grows out of it quick. I have absolutely no idea how to approach it considering she’s only 9 months old. One of the problems is that I know she won’t understand any of this for quite some time. Sometimes I try to distract her straight afterwards by doing something else or singing to her.

I really thought that this kind of thing would come later on, maybe after she was 1 at least. I certainly wasn’t expecting it to happen at 9 months old. I know that I had tantrums as a child so I hope that this isn’t something she gets from me.

Is there any advice you can give me on tantrums and how to help children get over it quickly?

  1. Oh dear, I don’t think there’s an easy fix to tantrums, especially at such a young age, but they do have them and yes, even that early 😉 I think it’s just a phase, one she’ll hopefully get over soon. x

  2. My children were the same, they had tantrums way younger then I thought that they would. My 2, 3 and even my 13 year old still have them all the time lol. I have found the best thing to do is just to ignore them and not let them get there own way as that is what mine normally have tantrums for xx

  3. A lot of tantrums this age are through frustration. She’s starting to know what she wants but not how to get it or understand why. We have something similar with Archie. Even though he’s almost four because of his Autism he can’t talk or communicate and has a developmental delay. He’s started to know what he wants but gets so frustrated that he can’t communicate it ends in major tantrums. It will pass although at the moment it feels like it might not!

  4. Oh my goodness so sorry to say this but I’m so happy to have read this. My little one is 10 months old and is exactly the same. What a little temper. No idea how do manage it x

  5. Our little girl was exactly the same! She’s about to turn 2 so REALLY bad tantrums at the minute but like you said, they don’t quite understand it yet. And you can’t reason with them when they’re that young. For us, the best thing is all about distraction. Talking in a calm voice so they take influence from you that everything is okay. And if they really are having a bad tantrum, move them somewhere safe and just let it run its course. It’s hard but you can do it! 🙂
