One of John’s favourite times of day is Erin’s bedtime because it means that he can read with her. Today John is reviewing one of Erin’s newest books, Circle by Jon Klassen and Mac Barnett!

Triangle and Square are visiting Circle, who lives at the waterfall. When they play hide-and-seek, Circle tells the friends the one rule: not to go behind the falling water. But after she closes her eyes to count to ten, of course that’s exactly where Triangle goes. Will Circle find Triangle? And what OTHER shapes might be lurking back there?

Circle is the third book in a series, and this time the character of Circle takes centre stage. Square returns and the reader is also introduced to the character of Triangle.

What makes this book a bit different is that it is a picture book drawn in primarily black and white. Usually children’s picture books are so bright and colourful so it makes a real change for this one to be so different.

It is a simple story of 3 friends playing hide and seek near a waterfall, but with a simple rule. ‘No hiding behind the waterfall!’ Triangle disobeys and goes behind the waterfall so Circle has to venture into the dark to find him, and stumbles on to something she didn’t expect.

This is a lovely book to read at bedtime. The use of shapes as characters really keeps children engaged, and the mystery towards the end of the book encourages children to use their imagination. Even as an adult I found myself wanted to know more about what was going on! I didn’t expect a mystery in a children’s picture book!
