This week’s children’s book review is all about Find Tom In Time – Ming Dynasty China by Fatti Burke. It was published by Nosy Crow and it can be purchased on Amazon*.

Tom’s not only lost in time, he’s lost his cat, too! Can you find Tom and his naughty cat, Digby, on every page? Packed with detailed artwork, fascinating ancient Chinese facts and over 100 other things to find – from a misbehaving ox to someone using an abacus – lose yourself in ancient China with this brilliantly interactive book!

When I was at school I remember loving to learn about history. I think the Ancient Egyptians was probably my favourite period. But, I don’t remember there being many fun ways to learn outside of what we did at school. The Find Tom in Time series of books are really different and they are a fun way to learn about a period in history. This book focuses on China; The Ming Dynasty.

The book is set up really well, with a clear introduction page to let readers know who Tom is and a little bit of a back story if you like.

Each page is split up into sections, such as The Great Wall, The Market and The Forbidden City, talking about a certain aspect of life during this time. There is a box with different things to aim to find on the page and it stands out really well so it’s easy to see. There are lots of people on each page but of course, the aim is to find Tom within them all. He’s always wearing the same thing so you know what to look for.

What I really love about this book are the illustrations. The pages are so much fun and there’s so much to look at. People on the pages are wearing different clothes, holding various things and doing different tasks. There are, of course, little snippets of information on each page too but they’re quite small so that isn’t too overwhelming. I find books with a lot of text hard for children to take in so this is a great way of doing things instead.

Now that we have this book, I really want to see which others are available as it would be great to get the set. I really think these books will help children want to learn about history as it’s done in such a fun way.
