Children's Book Review: WildLives: 50 Extraordinary Animals that Made History

AD | Gifted

This week’s book review is for WildLives: 50 Extraordinary Animals that Made History by Ben Lerwill. It was published by Nosy Crow on 5th September 2019 and can be purchased on Amazon.

In this fascinating and touching book, children can learn about 50 courageous creatures from around the world and throughout history. This captivating collection gathers heart-warming, surprising and often emotionally powerful stories of bravery, discovery and friendship. Featuring a range of animals – from heroes, helpers and adventurers to achievers and many more – young readers will discover some of the most famous and unforgettable animals of all time. Compelling and visually arresting in equal measure, this is the perfect introduction to just some of the amazing animals whose wild lives have made history.

Erin is getting to that age now where she is interested in everything. On recent trips to the library she has shown more and more interest in non-fiction books. Erin has always loved animals so I thought that WildLives: 50 Extraordinary Animals that Made History would be a great way to introduce her not only to some new animals but some that have one amazing things.

There are so many different amazing animals covered in this book (50, just like the title suggests) and honestly, I hadn’t heard of most of them. The pages have wonderful illustrations and photographs of the animals being spoken about as well as lots of really interesting information. The paragraphs aren’t too big which helps to keep the book suitable for younger children.

Books like this, filled with information, can become a bit overwhelming for children. However, this book is written in such a way that I think will hold a child’s attention. The sentences aren’t too long, the language is kept young and interesting and the information is really very interesting. As one of Erin’s very first non-fiction books, I think it was a great place to start.

WildLives: 50 Extraordinary Animals that Made History is such a lovely book for both children and adults. I have to say, I really enjoyed reading through this one with Erin and learning something new myself. It’s great that this book can be picked up at any time of the day, with maybe reading about 1 or 2 animals before bed!
