This week’s children’s book review is all about Beatrix and her Bunnies. It was published by Nosy Crow and can be purchased on Amazon*.
Beatrix loves the countryside, but lives in a big, lonely house in London – if only she had a friend. Then she meets Benjamin Bunny and everything changes! They spend every day together playing chase and follow my leader. But when Benjamin dies, Beatrix is heartbroken. She decides to write about Benjamin’s adventures and about her new bunny, Peter, who plays the tambourine and jumps through hoops. If she can publish her stories, she knows children will fall in love with Benjamin and Peter, and her bunnies will live forever.
Peter Rabbit is a character I knew during my own childhood, my Nanna has a spare bedroom in a Beatrix Potter theme and Erin now has Beatrix Potter books and soft toys for herself. Beatrix Potter and her stories are famous and for good reason however, I never really knew how those stories came to be.
This book shows a young Beatrix in her lonely London home, desperate for someone to keep her company and to be friends with. This is where we find out where she meets the bunny that helped to inspire her stories. The book does such a great job of telling us about Beatrix’s life while still being a fun story for children. As an adult, I was really interested in how Peter Rabbit came to be.
Something else I also loved about this book was that the story went beynd how the rabbits in the stories were created. We learn more about what Beatrix did with her life, where she ended up and some of the things that she really believed in.
Beatrix and her Bunnies is such a fun book not only to introduce children to the world of Beatrix Potter but to also extend some knowledge if they’re already fans. Who can resist a book with cute bunnies?
