This year the woods have been the place we’ve escaped to, mostly because without being able to drive there’s no where else in this small town to go. We always try to make it fun and different for Erin every time we go but without really knowing a lot about nature, that can be difficult. Look What I Found In The Woods is a great book to help with that.
To start with, I thought that this was going to be more of an educational book but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it follows a sort of story at the same time, in the form of some friends exploring in the woods. Along the way, these friends discover things such as different kinds of trees, what you can do to make scratchings of the bark, as well as plants and animals.
Throughout the book, as the children find something new to get excited about in the woods there are different things for you and your children to look out for. It’s nice that these things can be seen separately on the pages as they’re on a sort of gridded paper and separate from the main image on the page. If you wanted to take the book out on an adventure with you then you could easily pick out the different things to find.
Look What I Found In The Woods is such a great book for getting children interested in the woods and going outside to explore. The ending is just perfect as it encourages children to see what they’ve found as treasure (although never picking flowers etc, only things found already fallen off on the floor) and that in itself is a fun thing.
