Children's Book Review:The Human Body: A Shine A Light Book

Discover the secrets of the human body with this beautiful new Shine-a-Light title. Children can see muscles flex as a football is kicked, watch food travel through the digestive system as an apple is eaten, and take a peek at the skeleton holding a small boy upright while his height is measured. Sleep, dreaming, growing, and illness are also included, along with many other secrets of the human body.

The unique design of the book allows children to discover a “hidden“ image by holding the page up to a bright light, or shining a torch behind the page.

Ever since the day Erin needed an x-ray at about 2 years old she has been a bit obsessed with doctors, and fixing people or toys at home. It’s strange but when Erin broke her elbow earlier this year she wasn’t really that bothered about it but instead got excited to see her x-ray results. As soon as I saw The Human Body: A Shine A Light Book I knew that it would be something that Erin would enjoy.

The book is written in a really simple way so it’s really easy for children to follow. Erin is 4 and sometimes doesn’t like books that are too complicated, or hard for her to follow, so this was a great layout for her. Each page has a small bit of information such as learning about breathing or eating healthy foods, all easy concepts for someone of Erin’s age.

To see what is happening on the inside of the body, for each different page, you can lift it up to the light and you’ll see through to the inside of the human body. As you can see above, you get to see the inside of parts of the body such as lungs and this can obviously lead to a wider discussion about what that body part does.

For young readers wanting to learn more about anatomy The Human Body: A Shine A Light Book is a great place to start and it makes learning fun.
