Family Fun With WordSearch

Like everyone else, we have been spending a lot more time at home over the past few weeks. Being at home so much, having our routine thrown off and trying to fill the time can be really hard. We’ve been very lucky to have been sent some wonderful games to keep us busy, including WordSearch from Goliath. I always think of the paper version of this game so I was curious to see how it would transfer to a board game setting.

WordSearch is a game aimed at anyone aged 8+ and it can be played with 2-4 players. A junior version is also available for younger players. In the box you get a playing board, counters in 4 different colours, double sided search cards, a plastic cover and the green circle to keep everything together. There is very little setting up to do and you can be playing within minutes.

Erin loves it when we get a new game to play and even though she is well under the recommended age for WordSearch she desperately wanted to play with us. This one works by picking out a search card (each has a theme) and turning it round on each turn. Then, each player races to find the word first, placing down their coloured tiles over the word.

As Erin was playing with us we were telling her the word and talking about the letter it started with. This way, although she wasn’t able to fully find the word she was able to try to find it just by the first letter. Erin really loved being able to join in and bending the rules for her was quite easy, without changing how the rest of us played.

One of the twists with this WordSearch is that if you get a word and it cuts into someone else’s, you get to take away those counters. This means that no matter how many words you’ve gotten right, another player could wipe them out.

WordSearch is a really fun family game which really helps make education fun, especially for Erin! We get to play, she gets to join in and get some practice in with letters!
