Today’s children’s book review is for Beast Feast by Emma Yarlett. It was published by Walker Books on 3rd October 2019 and it can be purchased on Amazon.
Beast has found a tasty dinner, and he’s written to all his friends to invite them to a feast. Unfortunately, Dinner is a child who very much does not want to be eaten. As Beast’s friends send their instructions for cooking Dinner, is there any way Dinner can convince Beast to change his menu?
Around this time last year we read our first Emma Yarlett book, Dragon Post, and we loved it! Dragon Post was so different because there was things to do throughout the book like having letters to open and read. In this book, we meet Beast, who one day catches Dinner. Beast takes Dinner home and gets him ready to be cooked for a dinner party with his friends.
Inside the book are the replies for dinner from Beast’s friends. The letters are a really great addition to the story as you get to get an idea of who might be coming to the dinner party. I really liked the little details such as the slime drops that you can see in the picture above. The added extras really add something special to the whole book and they’re great talking points for children.
Even though the story begins with Beast wanting to eat Dinner, things slowly change. Dinner helps Beast to think of different kinds of foods, shows him how to have fun and they start to have fun together… something that neither of them expected. We often use books to explain things to Erin and this one has a great way of talking about being friends with people who might be a little different.
Beast Feast is such a fun book and it’s really creative. There’s a great mix of fun, getting to know the characters and also various friends of Beast who I found really amusing! I loved reading their letter replies and I think these were one of my personal favourite parts of the book.
