How To Find The Perfect Curtains

How To Find The Perfect Curtains

Buying curtains – it’s as simple as finding a pair you like and then just hanging them up, right? However, curtains aren’t always one-size-fits-all and there are a few things you need to think about when finding the perfect pair, especially when you have a baby and pets to think about too!

Get the right size and style for your home by following our simple checklist:

First of all, you’ll have to measure for your new curtain pole or track to hang the curtains on. When measuring the width of the pole, you’ll probably need to add an extra 20cm to either side of the window recess. This is so that the curtains have room to comfortably gather when they’re open in the daytime and cover the whole window on an evening.

When you’re putting the pole up, we recommend fitting it around 15 cm above the window.

Next, you’ll have to decide what length of curtains you want to go for. Do you want to go for sill-length (that sits snug to the window)? Or below the sill? Or to the floor?

There are a few things to think about when choosing your ideal length for your curtains. Full-length curtains do look great and add a stylish focal point to your living room, but it’s probably not the best option for your kitchen, for example. Plus, if there’s a radiator under your window, then long curtains will probably block the heat from getting into your room.

You might choose to go for the shorter lengths if you have pets or toddlers who could potentially scratch, chew or pull on the bottoms of curtains, too. For sill-length, measure half an inch above the sill to get the perfect fit.

Now that the measurement part is out of the way, you can go curtain shopping! Online companies like Direct Blinds offer plenty of different styles, colours and materials so you can find your dream curtains right from the comfort of your home. Plus, they send you free samples so that you can get a feel of the material and then you just enter the measurements you took above, and then they’ll send you a pair of custom-made curtains. Easy peasy!

You have a bit of creative license with your furnishings as there’s so many designs available to complement your home. Curtains can be a great focal point or pop of colour that can instantly transform a room. Plus, they’re practical – there’s materials like weave, faux suede or cotton, all of which are thermal energy saving and help your home stay warm in the winter.

Make curtain shopping easy with our handy checklist for what you need to do to get the perfect fit for your curtains. Never again will you be getting out the sewing machine and attempting a DIY alteration of your new curtains!
