How To Make The Most Of A Small Family Bathroom

Small bathroom

Right now, our bathroom isn’t the most pleasant of rooms to be in. A large portion of the room is taken up by an ancient boiler which we haven’t been able to afford to replace yet. Even with that taken out of the picture, our bathroom isn’t a huge room and sometimes all 3 of us end up in there at the same time.

Having the boiler upgraded to a Combi and having the whole bathroom replaced is right at the top of our list of things to do. We’ve lived here for 5 years now so I’ve had plenty of time to think about the best ways to make the most of a small family bathroom. Here’s some of the things I’d like to include:

Scrub-a-dub-dub

We currently only have a bath in our bathroom but both John and I really miss being able to have a shower. Thanks so the layout of our house and the old boiler, we’re unable to have a shower at the moment. To make the most of the space in our bathroom when we do manage to renovate it, we’ll be looking at getting a bath with an overhead shower. This way, John and I will be able to have quick showers in the morning instead of wasting time on a bath but Erin can still enjoy hers in the evenings.

Keep it tidy

One of the things about a family bathroom is that it can quickly get taken over by children’s items. We currently have Erin’s shampoos and body washes taking up the windowsill and her toys are all over, no matter what we try to do with them. Our bathroom looks like a play area most of the time.

I would love to have storage built into the shower area such as corner shelves. This would be a great area for toiletries that we used on a regular basis. We would also really like lockable drawers/ a cupboard for items we don’t want Erin to be able to get to. I think to make the most of our space tall units could work really well for us. Instead of the wall space being wasted, we could make the most of it by adding storage.

Light it up!

I hate dark, dingy rooms and bathrooms can easily feel this way, especially if they’re small with a lot of furniture. Bright lights can help to make the room seem brighter and of course, brighter rooms make people happier. I think, depending on the layout we choose, we would also be able to have quite a large bathroom window to let in lots of natural light during the day.

Declutter

It’s easy to think that accessories and ornaments can help to make a room like nicer or more welcoming. For a family bathroom, all this does is add more things that need cleaning, dusting and moving to clean whatever area they are on. Having a bathroom that is free from any unnecessary items will help the room to look bigger, brighter and more importantly, take less time to clean.

Planning a bathroom can be hard, especially if you’re working with a limited space but Bathing Solutions have lots of great ideas for small bathrooms and how to make the most of the space.
