As a family we love travelling and the UK is a great place to discover. We have so many wonderful places to visit and if you’re with children you’ll want to make sure they have fun too. In this post I’ll be sharing some ideas about 5 great cities to visit in the UK with children.
London
Although it can be an expensive city to visit London is a fantastic city to visit with children. There are ways to bring down the cost and still have a fantastic time away with children. The first thing to look at is booking your accommodation. Use a site where you can narrow down your search and find what you’re looking for in the right location and then compare prices. You don’t have to go for a hotel but instead could choose an apartment if this would work well for you as a family.
Something great about London is that there is so much to see and do and you might never do the same thing twice. There are plenty of museums which have free entry such as the Science Museum or maybe the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich would be of interest.
For other ideas for things to do in London with children there’s always London Zoo, discovering Leicester Square, a trip on the London Eye or taking a walk around Hyde Park. London has something for all budgets and interests and you’re bound to find loads there to do.
Do some research and find plenty of tips on travelling to London with children before you head off for a fabulous time.
Norwich
As our home county I just had to include Norwich in this post. We often go for days out in Norwich with our 5 year old and there is plenty to do, not only right in the city center but also surrounding areas.
Norwich has great shopping options, plenty of restaurants and loads of fun for children including bowling alleys, cinemas and Norwich Castle right in the heart of the city. A personal favourite for lunch is afternoon tea at The Assembly House which always has a fun theme such as the beach or the circus and children will be amazed by it!
Slightly further afield is Roarr Dinosaur Adventure which is a full day out and the kids will love it. There’s shows, a splash pad, dinosaur trails and a huge play area to enjoy as well as high ropes and an animal section and huge indoor soft play.
Birmingham
Birmingham has been on our wishlist of cities to visit for quite some time now as there is so much to do there as a family.
For chocolate lovers (and who isn’t?) Cadbury World is a great place to start. Learn all about chocolate and maybe buy some for yourself at the gift shop at the end. You can’t go wrong with a trip to the SeaLife center either and I think this is somewhere children of all ages can enjoy.
Thinktank is an award winning science museum in Birmingham and another place suited to the whole family. Children under 8 will enjoy MiniBrum, a miniature city to play in while other things to discover are the outdoor science garden and the Investigate the Present gallery.
Cambridge
Cambridge might not be somewhere you think of initially when planning a city break for families. However, you will be pleasantly surprised with just how much there is to do there. You have various options for accommodation with great choices right near the train station which is a 10 minute walk into the city center or you might choose to stay somewhere more central.
Cambridge has some great museums, all of which are free, and perfect for children. The Museum of Zoology has over 10,000 things on display and all to do with animals and sea life. There are so many cool animals to look at and probably a lot you’ve never seen before too. The Fitzwilliam Museum is also a good one to visit and they also have a lovely cafe and gift shop to visit while you’re there.
If you’re looking for something to do outdoors then the Cambridge University Botanic Garden a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours, especially if the weather is nice. Other options include punting down the River Cam or a walk around town to look at the stunning university buildings.
Edinburgh
Scotland is such a beautiful place to visit and Edinburgh has so much to offer a family looking for an adventure.
Edinburgh Zoo is one of my all time favourite zoos and although a bit hilly with some steep walks, the penguin parade is absolutely worth going for alone. You do need to set aside a whole day for a trip to the zoo though because there so much that you won’t want to miss.
When exploring the beautiful city of Edinburgh try to add in trips to Edinburgh Castle, a walk down the Royal Mile or go back in history for a lesson at the Real Mary King’s Close. Harry Potter fans might want to go on a tour and see some of the locations that inspired things in the books or the National Museum of Scotland might be somewhere to spend a few hours.
All of these cities have amazing things for families to do together and I can’t wait to discover some of them myself.
