Erin is such a big reader and as such, I am always looking for fun books for her to read next. As soon as I heard about the Royal Institute of Magic series by Victor Kloss, I knew it would be one she’d want to read. The first four books have been released, with the final book (The High Council) being released in early 2027.

What is Elizabeth’s Legacy about?

One cryptic note. Two missing parents. Zero ordinary answers, and a magical world he never expected.

Ben Greenwood’s life turned upside down the day his parents vanished – leaving behind nothing but questions. But when a mysterious letter arrives out of the blue, it changes everything.

The letter points Ben toward a strange organisation he’s never heard of: the Royal Institute of Magic. Suddenly, he’s thrown into a realm where spells are bought and sold, magical creatures roam the streets, and danger lurks around every corner.

To uncover the truth, Ben must dig into an ancient family secret – and face a dark force the Institute has been fighting for centuries. But if he fails, he will lose any chance of putting his world back together.

What did I think?

Ben is a really likeable main character. He’s curious, determined and doesn’t always get things right, which makes him feel believable. His friendship with Charlie was another highlight for me. Their conversations felt natural, and Charlie adds plenty of lighter moments without taking away from the bigger story. The friendship between them felt genuine and was one of the things that kept the book grounded, even when everything around them was magical.

I also liked that there was a real mystery running through the whole book. Ben isn’t just exploring a magical world for the sake of it; he’s trying to uncover the truth about what happened to his parents. That mystery ties everything together and gives the story a real sense of purpose. Every clue felt important, and I enjoyed trying to work things out alongside him.

By the time I reached the final few chapters, I didn’t want to put the book down. The ending answered enough questions to feel satisfying, but it also left plenty unresolved, making me keen to carry on with the series and that’s exactly what I want from the first book in a fantasy series.

Is it suitable for children?

The great thing about this series is that it’s great for both children and adults. Even though this is one I really enjoyed myself, I know that my 10 year old will love it as well. In fact, she’s going to be reading them straight after me. I’d probably recommend it for around 9 years and up, especially if they already enjoy fantasy books.

What I would say though is that there are some tense moments and a few battles, but nothing that I thought was too much. It’s much more about adventure, friendship and solving a mystery than anything scary. Of course, a few moments like this help to add to the excitement of the story.

The chapters are a nice length as well, so it works whether your child is reading independently or you’re reading together before bed.

Would I recommend it?

Definitely. I finished the book wanting to pick up the second one straight away, which is always a good sign. There are still loads of questions left unanswered, but not in a frustrating way. It just makes you want to keep reading.

If you’ve got a child who has finished Harry Potter, Percy Jackson or Keeper of the Lost Cities and is looking for another fantasy series, I think this is well worth a look.
