Children’s Book Review: B Is For Baby

Erin is currently starting to read and write so we’re always looking for things to help her learn certain letters. B Is For Baby by Atinuke is one of our newest books and it focuses on the letter B.

Baby’s brother is getting ready to take a basket of bananas all the way to Baba’s bungalow in the next village. He will have to go along the bumpy road, past the baobab trees, birds and butterflies, and all the way over the bridge. What he doesn’t realize is that his cute, very curious baby sister is secretly coming along for the amazing bicycle ride, too!

Something that immediately stood out for me was that Atinuke has used an African setting for the book. I think we are so used to having books feature white characters. We live in town where there isn’t much diversity so we try to make sure that Erin learns about all different kinds of people and places in other ways.

The book focuses on the letter B and I love that it shows things that might not necessarily be shown in other books like this for young children. Although some of the words are things Erin will already know like ‘banana’ she can also discover new things and new words like ‘baboon’.

There is so much for us to talk about with Erin in B Is For Baby. Not only can we teach her new words but show her that people live in completely different places to us and live a very different way of life.
