This week’s children’s book review is all about Fabulous Fifi The Flamenco Flamingo by Alice Corrie and Ipek Konak. It was published by Owlet Press and can be purchased on Amazon*.
A tongue twisting, read-aloud debut from author Alice Corrie, who has worked as a children’s book editor specialising in picture books for almost twenty years. With dynamic and playful illustrations from Turkish artist Ipek Konak, the funny storyof Fifi the Flamenco loving flamingo is a celebration of fabulousness and pure camp, as well as the vibrance of hispanic and latino culture. When Fifi tries to dance in front of the other flamingos, her flappy, flippy-floppy legs fail and they all fall about laughing at her. As she sets off on her quest to find her calling, she discovers the Flamenco Fiesta. The crowds all love Fifi’s unique style of dancing and she becomes a fabulous, fantastic fashionable ‘Flamenco Flamingo’!
In this story we meet Fifi, a young flamingo who wanted to be fantastic and famous! Fifi knew what she wanted but when she danced in front of the other flamingos they laughed at her because she wasn’t the best dancer. I bet that this is something that a lot of children can relate to and might have experienced at some point.
The illustrations are really fun and bright, just like the story. Fifi is such a great character and one that you want to do well right the very beginning! It was great to see Fifi get a chance to do what they loved, no matter who was watching or where they were. It’s all about seizing opportunities and making the most of certain situations.
Fabulous Fifi the Flamenco Flamingo is such a wonderful book about following your dreams and doing what your passionate about. It’s really important for children to remember this!
