Teaching Your Child to Respect Other Cultures

AD | Collaborative post

Educating your child about the many cultures of the world is a great way for them to understand and celebrate diversity. It will also give your child a better insight into the traditions and customs some of their friends may practice. Teaching your child to respect other cultures will benefit your child throughout their lifetime.

Here are some great ideas from an independent school in Letchworth, on how you can teach your child to respect other cultures…

Start with your own family

Do you know your own family heritage? Learning about your own family’s background or religious heritage is a great way to introduce your child to different cultures. Teach your child about their own identity and traditions, and explore ways in which your family is different from others. Then, begin to look at their friends cultures. Look at how and why you might do things differently and teach your child to respect other’s beliefs, even if they are different from their own.

Create a global calendar

Another great way to teach your child about other cultures is to make a calendar of all the holidays and traditions celebrated around the world. For example, Diwali, Hanukkah and Eid. Add these special dates to your calendar and use each one as an opportunity to teach your child about the celebrations that are taking place across the globe. Discuss the people, the religion and the food, and research other interesting facts about each culture.

Cultural cooking

Expand your child’s cultural awareness through cooking. By cooking together you can introduce your child to many different foods from around the world. In addition, your child will learn about various ingredients, utensils and dining etiquettes used in other countries.

Explore the world online

The internet is an amazing way to transport your child to anywhere in the world and experience new lifestyles. Spend time with your child exploring various cultures online and writing down your observations in a learning journal. It may even inspire your next holiday destination! Reading books and watching documentaries are also great for teaching your child about different cultures and traditions.

Embrace diversity

It is important for parents to role model cultural empathy and sensitivity. Parents must lead by example and always embrace diversity. If you are not open-minded about other people, you can’t expect your child to be. When your child asks questions about other races or religions, use them as an opportunity to learn together.
