Children’s Book Review: Kiss The Crocodile

AD | Gifted Item

Crocodiles are probably one of Erin’s favourite animals. We sing songs about them, have puzzles in the shape of them and we love reading stories about them. Today John is talking about Kiss the Crocodile by Sean Taylor and Ben Mantle.

Down in the jungle, three best friends – Monkey, Tortoise and Anteater – are playing silly games together. After Stick Splash, Scary Monsters and Silly Dancing, they spy Little Crocodile and his big crocodile mum in the swamp. Do they want to play a new game, Little Crocodile asks … a DARING game. KISS THE CROCODILE! Who will be brave enough to steal a peck from the ‘sleeping’ croc, with his big tail, pointy teeth and sharp claws? MWAH!

Kiss the Crocodile is a vividly coloured picture book for children featuring 3 friends who take it in turns to be brave enough to Kiss a sleeping Crocodile. I was struck immediately by the quality of the illustrations in this book because they are so colourful and fun. The animals and the forest setting are really brought to life in a wonderful way.

I was worried, as I started to read this book to Erin, that one of these cute animals was going to get eaten by a Crocodile! This turned out not to be the case however, so it’s a safe and enjoyable read for children at bedtime.

I love books where it shows clearly that children can play and be friends with others who don’t look exactly like them, and that there is nothing to fear from things that are different or new. Kiss the Crocodile does exactly that and it’s such an important thing for children to learn.

Of course, I wouldn’t recommend that anybody kiss a real crocodile but I would recommend for you to read this book with your children!
