This week’s children’s book review is all about Welcome to our World: A celebration of children everywhere. The book was published by Nosy Crow and it can be purchased on Amazon*.
Children all over the world are very different, but they also have much in common. In this beautifully illustrated book, young children can learn all about what people in other countries eat, wear and play, and how they speak and celebrate. From breakfasts to birthdays, cakes to clothes, and hiccups to hellos, there are so many ways to say and do things – but everyone shares a love of family, friends, food and fun. This delightful book teaches us that despite different languages, customs and traditions, it really is a small world, after all.
Now that Erin is 5 and in Reception she is learning more and more about the world. She is definitely notices more than not everyone is like her and she has questions now about why people are different, especially if they live somewhere else. Welcome to our World: A celebration of children everywhere is a great way to talk to children about so many things.
The book is set out into really clear sections, so it’s easy for children to follow. Each section has large images to go with smaller snippets of text. The information isn’t overwhelming and children will be able to take in small bits at a time.
The book covers various topics such as home life, playing, what happens when a tooth falls out and what breakfast might be. Not only is there information about practices in different cultures and countries but there is also ways to say things in different languages.
Although Erin might have started out noticing differences between herself and others, this book is a good way to assure children that everyone has things in common too.
