How To Add A Personal Touch To A New Home

How To Add A Personal Touch To A New Home

I remember moving into the house that we live in now and it really didn’t feel like it was ours for such a long time. The previous owners had absolutely awful taste and had destroyed what should have been a wonderful house. Rooms were painted in awful colours, white emulsion had been used over things like light switches and kitchen tiles… just to name a few issues. I wanted to really put our (my) own touch on the place as soon as we moved in. Here are some ideas for how to add a personal touch to a new home:

White paint

Now, I know I have just moaned a bit about white emulsion but this is only because it was used in the wrong way in our house. If, like us, you move into a house with some interesting choices of colour on the wall then painting over it might be your best way forward. While this doesn’t give a totally personal feel to a home, it does remove the idea of other people living in your space. With a blank canvas, you can really put your personality into every room.

Add some colour

As nice as a blank canvas can be for a while, white can get very boring to look at. To make your new house feel more homely and ‘yours’ a good idea would be to use soft furnishings. Using curtains or bedding in your favourite colour can help you to settle in quickly and feel at home with ease.

Family photos

One really easy way to add the ultimate personal touch to a new home is by adding pictures and prints of family photos. We recently added a gallery wall in our dining room and this has made such a difference to the feel of the room. Every time I walk through the door and see the gorgeous photos I picked out, it makes me smile. You can get great deals on photos prints; click here to find out more.

Make it cosy

Something that really makes our house feel like home now is how cosy it is. This has nothing to do with the size of the rooms but instead, what you put in them that counts. We love to have a cuddle with Erin on the couch, especially at bedtime and we have various blankets to snuggle in with and loads of comfy cushions. Erin has her own Minion blanket and shows a preference for one cushion in particular and I find that little things like this really help to add a personal touch to your home.
