At the beginning of April John, Erin and myself headed off to Cambridge for a last minute weekend away. When I say last minute, I mean I booked it the evening before we went. Not like me at all. Having never been to Cambridge before I had no idea where to stay by my sister recommended the ibis Cambridge Central.
The ibis Cambridge Central can be found right at Cambridge Train Station so it’s in a fantastic location is this is how you’re traveling. From here you have about a 15 minute walk into the center of Cambridge. I didn’t mind this at all but as we had Erin with us, we had to go back for a nap which was a bit of a pain! Erin refused to sleep in her pushchair on this day because she was so excited!
Check in at this hotel is a bit different from anywhere I’ve ever been before. There is no reception desk or computers to check in on. Instead, there are staff waiting to check you in on tablets. It was all very quick and efficient. The man who checked us in was great as he made sure we had a travel cot in our room for Erin before we went up. There is a really lovely seating area near the lifts as well and a coffee shop so if check in is busy or you want to wait for your train, there is somewhere to chill out for a while.
Across the road from the hotel you can find a Sainsbury’s as well as a couple of coffee shops and places to get some food. I won’t name the chains because they could change at any time. However, the strip of shops means that you can near enough get anything you want right across the street from the hotel.
Even with a travel cot in our room, it was plenty spacious enough for the three of us. The room had a double bed that had both hard and soft pillows. I really liked this as I could mix and match to get the right feel for me. The room had a small space to hang clothes in one corner and quite a large work desk. There was a TV mounted on the wall opposite the desk.
There was a small en suite as well but it was really nothing special. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t a bad bathroom but I have had better before. The shower was nice and hot and there was plenty of space, despite the actual room being quite small. It was also very clean so I can’t complain about that!
To make life a lot easier we paid in advance to have breakfast added on to our stay. Erin wakes up early and wants something to eat nearly straight away so this was the best option for us. I’m glad we did as well because the breakfast was amazing!
Breakfast had so many different options and all three of us were happy with what we had. There was a cooked breakfast including bacon, eggs, sausages, beans etc. as well as cereals, toast, muffins, fruit puree and yogurts, among other things too.
As you can see from the photo, Erin was super happy about breakfast. She ate loads and loved the attention she got from the staff as well.
We had a really nice stay at the ibis Cambridge Central. The staff were partly what made our visit so special though. Everyone made a massive fuss of Erin, which she loved, and they also made sure that she was cared for as well as me and John. About 20 minutes of being in our room after check in, John spilled a cup of tea all over the bed and the staff were more than happy to come and change our bedding when we went out. Nothing was too much trouble.
Next time we go to Cambridge we’ll definitely be staying here again.
Wow loving the decor in the hotel, looks more like a boutique hotel. Best things are always the breakfasts!
I really do like hotel breakfast
I love last minute nights away, I have just booked for us to go glamping next week. The hotel looks fab x
Looks like a fab stay away, brave to be spontaneous! We have to plan in advance because we have a dog but I’d love to surprise everyone with a night away
I love Cambridge but hate the long drive eating there and back. I would definitely consider a weekend break next time I go and this hotel looks great! Kat x
I’ve never stayed in an ibis before. This one looks really good. That breakfast does look yummy x
Sounds like a great place for a short stay!
Look at your little bubbas face! If it’s good enough for bubba, it’s good enough for me x
Having a hotel breakfast is pretty essential when you have kids isn’t it. Mine are always the first there, which is good for them and the other guests!
