I see a lot of posts claiming that certain products are ‘essentials’ for something or another whether it be newborn babies, parents to be or maybe fussy eaters. The thing is, everyone is different with completely different experiences. So, with that in mind, I wanted to write a potty training essentials post but everything you’ll find in this post is something we have used ourselves.
Potty training books
One of the biggest things about potty training is preparation. Going from nappies and peeing where ever you like is such a big change and if your child is as young as Erin was when we started potty training (2.5) it will be hard for them to understand. We chose the Penwizard potty training bundle which included a book and sticker chart.
The book is personalised and shows the child going on a journey to buy new knickers, discovering what the potty is for and finally, mastering having a wee and a poo on it. We stuck one of the large stickers on Erin’s potty so she knew it was hers and started using the sticker chart from day 1. Erin really enjoyed the reward of a sticker every time she used the potty and it really helped us to get started.

Summer Infant My Size Potty
Erin is the type of child who doesn’t like to be different. I mean this in the sense that if we’re using a cup, she wants to as well, or if we’re using a fork, she doesn’t want to be left out. So, when it came to picking her first potty we thought it would be best to get something that looked the most like the toilet that we use. The Summer Infant My Size Potty has a realistic flush and space to put wipes in the top.

Potette Travel Potty and Training Seat
As a family who don’t drive taking a big potty out and about with us was just not practical. There is only so much space in the basket of a pushchair or the other option was to put the potty in a bag and carry it around. The Potette doubles as a travel potty and travel training seat and it folds down really nicely, making it easy to take out and about. The Potette uses bags instead of a hard ‘bowl’ so this isn’t to be used as a day to day potty but it really comes in handy for travelling and days out.

Baby Bjorn Smart Potty
Although we already had the Summer Infant My Size Potty it was becoming an absolute pain to keep moving this between rooms. Our toilet is downstairs but Erin was waking up needing a wee quite a lot. We still put her to bed in a nappy as she’s not totally dry yet but she absolutely hates having a wee in a nappy now. If she’s awake she wants to go in the potty or the toilet so we needed addition options for her.
The Baby Bjorn Smart Potty is a nice size and with ours being gold, it really makes it seem special for the child. The inside bowl is easily removed and cleaned and is a lovely potty to keep upstairs (or any other room).

Baby Bjorn Toilet Training Seat
Erin is quite small for her age, only just fitting into 2-3 year clothes (which are still a bit big) even though she’s nearly 3. She has found the toilet to be quite intimidating and gets a bit scared about falling in if she’s sat on the regular seat. The Baby Bjorn Toilet Training Seat can be altered to fit your seat at home and the setting won’t change unless you decide to change it or fit it for another seat.
I love that that Erin can put the Baby Bjorn Toilet Training Seat on the toilet herself and I’ll know that it’s safe and won’t slip anywhere. This one also has a bit of a handle too so we can easily clip it to the pushchair if we want to take it out anywhere with us.

I know it might sound a bit crazy that we have this many different products for potty training but honestly, they have all helped us in different ways. There are so many options on the market so hopefully this helps someone who has no idea where to start.
Are there any product you would recommend for potty training?
