Quiz has come to Norwich Theatre Royal as part of its UK tour! Read on to find out more about the show and what we thought.
About the show
In a shockingly shameless scam, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was duped out of £1,000,000. Or was it?
Rory Bremner stars as Chris Tarrant alongside Charley Webb, Lewis Reeves and Mark Benton in Quiz, the thrilling and entertaining ride through the infamous Coughing Major scandal which engulfed the world’s most popular TV quiz show.
The story remains a mystery and had over six million people glued to their screens watching ITV’s adaptation of this West End smash hit play.
Now, uncovering new evidence, it’s time to ask you, the audience, to put fingers on keypads and answer the ultimate 50/50: guilty or not guilty?
Did we enjoy the show?
As someone who lives quiz shows, and grew up with the likes of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, I remember this happening so well! I was excited to see how the story would translate to the stage.
Something completely new to me for this show was the use of audience keypads. This was just like on the real Who Wants to Be a Millionaire show. The keypads added an extra element to the show, brought the audience in and made us part of what was going on. At various stages throughout you’re able to vote on whether you think Charles and Diana Ingram are guilty.
Set between a mix of a courtroom, the lives of the Ingrams and the Who Wants to be a Millionaire? studio, there are plenty of changes to keep things interesting. It’s quite a simple set and not much moves around. The courtroom set up doubles as a pub and somewhere for the show’s audience/ contestants. The lights used for the studio scenes were so bright from where we were sat (rear stalls) and quite blinding at times.
This show has a phenomenal cast. To start with, Rory Bremner is absolutely perfection as Chris Tarrant. From the minute he walks out on to the stage, you know he’s got the character down perfectly. There’s no other way to say it other than Chris Tarrant could have been on that stage himself.
Apart from Charley Webb as Diana Ingram and Lewis Reeves as Charles Ingram, most of the other cast members all play various roles. Mark Benton in particular had us in stitches, thanks to quick thinking and a guy in the audience with a fantastic laugh. Each of the cast have their own moments throughout the show though. This really allows them all to shine at the right time.
Quiz was much funnier than I was expecting it to be. Actually, I think I was expecting it to be quite a serious show, considering what it is about. However, thanks to the backstory and looking into the lead-up to that infamous show, there were so many funny moments. My sister came to this one with me and we were both laughing so much.
Quiz was a really refreshing surprise and I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would. Not only is the cast fantastic, but the story is very interesting and it really does make you think.
