What We’ve Been Watching: February 2019

What We’ve Been Watching is a monthly feature where we talk about everything we’ve been watching over the past month. It might be something on Netflix, NOW TV, Sky or even just a DVD we’ve had for years but wanted to watch again. If we’ve been watching something new we’ll talk about that too!

*May contain spoilers so read with caution!

TV

Russian Doll

Natasha Lyonne has been in so many good things, more recently as Nicky in Orange Is The New Black. I think she’s a fantastic actress as and as soon as I saw the trailer for Russian Doll I just had to watch it.

Lyonne stars as Nadia Vulvokov and the whole thing starts on her birthday at a party. Unfortunately, Nadia dies (not a spoiler) over and over again and the series is about her trying to figure out what is going on. I thought Russian Doll was funny, sad and very different all at the same time. There are only 8 episodes which are each 30 minutes long so it doesn’t take long to finish.

Riverdale

Riverdale was one of those shows that started quite a while ago now and I was never really sure if I wanted to watch it or not. It seemed like the kind of thing I would like, seeing as I like shows like The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl etc. but after hearing mixed things, I just wasn’t sure. One night John had to work late and I couldn’t decide on anything else so I figured I would give this a go.

I was hooked after the 1st episode.

I think the cast is great, it’s dark but not too dark and Skeet Ulrich is in it! It wasn’t at all what I was expecting and now I’m watching it whenever I get the chance!

Films

Love, Simon

I’d watched a film called Everything, Everything a couple of months ago and it starred Nick Robinson who was also in the TV show, Melissa and Joey. I read in an interview that he had given himself a rule of no longer playing high school aged characters but broke that rule for Love, Simon. This alone made me want to watch the film because I wanted to see what was so special about it.

Love, Simon is a pretty groundbreaking film as it’s the first major studio film to focus on a gay, teenage romance! The film was so unbelievably special and I had all the feels while I watched it. The casting was spot on and the story was so good. My only slight annoyance was the ending (only a little bit) but I can overlook that because of how good the rest of the film was.

There needs to be more films made like this!

Passenger

Strangely, this was our pick for Valentine’s Day. Nothing else had really stood out to us while we were looking at our options and I don’t think you can ever really go wrong with a Jennifer Lawrence film.

I knew that this was set in space but I didn’t really know what to expect. The film wasn’t at all what I thought it was going to be but I really enjoyed it. John fell asleep through a chunk of it but said he enjoyed the bits he did say. John did manage to see the end though which was something. We nearly managed a whole film together!

February has been a bit of a strange month really after starting a new series and it also being half term so we haven’t watched nearly as much as we normally would.
