Coral Reef City is home to the most dazzling shoals of tropical fish in ALL the ocean. And then there is Terry. Terry looks grey. Terry feels dull. And although he is the best at playing “Hide A Fish”, he can’t help but wonder: Just what would it feel like to be part of that dashing, flashing crew? So, with the help of his friends, he fashions a flashy costume and is ready to impress… “Hello-o-o everybody! Just call me TROPICAL Terry!” But will life as a tropical fish be everything he always dreamed of?
One of Erin’s absolute favourite places to go is the aquarium. Not long after a recent visit to Sea Life London Aquarium on a trip with Greater Anglia we received this fantastic book, Tropical Terry by Jarvis. With the aquarium fresh in her mind, she grabbed this book as soon as she saw it.
If I saw Tropical Terry in a bookshop it would stand out to me immediately because of how bright and colourful it is. Just look at how beautiful that cover is. The whole book is filled with bright and exciting colours and so much for children to discover. Erin doesn’t always really understand the story for the first few times we read a new book so something like this is great just to get her interested.
Tropical Terry is a story of fitting in and friendship. Terry is a pretty plain fish in a sea full of tropical, colourful fish and he really just wants to fit in and be like everyone else. While I won’t go into too much of the plot, what I will say is that Tropical Terry really sends a great message to children.
Tropical Terry really explains how important friendships are and also, why you shouldn’t try to change just to ‘fit in’. I really love when a book can be fun for young readers but also put across a strong message without being too serious.
