What We’ve Been Watching: June 2019

What We’ve Been Watching is a monthly feature where we talk about everything we’ve been watching over the past month. It might be something on Netflix, NOW TV, Sky or even just a DVD we’ve had for years but wanted to watch again. If we’ve been watching something new we’ll talk about that too!

TV and streaming

Chernobyl

As soon as I saw this advertised I knew I wanted to watch it. I was only born in March 1986 and I don’t remember ever learning about Chernobyl at school so I really didn’t know much about it at all. There are only 5 episodes to watch and I managed to watch them all in the space of a couple of days. Once I started watching I couldn’t really stop.

Chernobyl was one of the most interesting shows that I’ve seen in a long time and right now, I think it has been one of the best things I have watched this year. However, some of the episodes (1 especially) was really hard to watch and I struggled through it. There isn’t much that I can’t watch but this particular episode really got to me. Chernobyl isn’t for the feint hearted though so be warned that it’s very graphic throughout.

Good Girls

I binge watched the whole of series 1 of Good Girls when it first came out on Netflix and I loved it. Good Girls was something really different to everything else I’d been watching and it was also really funny. I watched series 2 quite quickly as well as soon as I realised it was out but I wasn’t quite as happy with series 2. This series was still pretty funny and entertaining but I think they went a little bit too far with some of the storylines. As a whole, the plot is really unrealistic anyway but some things were just a bit too much or I don’t think they added anything to the series. However, after the ending I will still probably watch series 3 if there is one.

Killing Eve

I can’t tell you how excited I was when this was finally released here in the UK. I’m still baffled as to why the US got it before us or why it wasn’t released everywhere at the same time. Luckily, there seemed to be no spoilers around so nothing was ruined.

After just how good series 1 was, I don’t really know what I was expecting from series 2. I didn’t think it would be as good. The thing is, series 2 was so different so I don’t think you can really compare them. I really enjoyed series 2 though and I loved how we got more of certain characters in a completely different way. There was plenty of excitement, secrets and twists and I was not disappointed at all.

The Handmaid’s Tale

I think The Handmaid’s Tale is one of my favourite TV shows in general and I have loved all of it so far. From the first episode I wanted more and now we’re a few episodes in on series 3. So much as happened already so far and it’s hard to ever know where the plot is going to go.

Although we’re only a couple of episodes in there has been a lot happening. I’ve loved seeing how the Waterfords are coping with everything and how June is settling into a new environment.  The one thing I am missing at the minute is a bit more of everything that’s going on in Canada and everyone there.

Film

Bohemian Rhapsody

I actually bought Bohemian Rhapsody for John for Father’s Day and honestly, I really wasn’t that bothered about watching it. I don’t know why but when it was released I said I wouldn’t have minded just giving it a miss. Then we put it on and I was hooked in the first couple of minutes.

Rami Malek definitely deserved his awards for playing Freddie Mercury in this film but also, the guy who plays Brian May looks like an exact copy of him. We have watched Bohemian Rhapsody quite a few times now and even Erin asks to put it on (she likes the songs). I’m glad I gave this one a go because it was so much better than I was expecting it to be.

  1. Oh I loved this last month. Looks like another great TV month for you.

I really enjoyed Chernobyl and bohemian rhapsody along with a star is born was the best film I watched last year x

  2. We haven’t braved Chernobyl yet! We’ve been watching Killing Eve and Good Omens in June.

  3. We started Chernobyl but have only watched the first one but it is very good. I also want to make a start on Killing Eve, watched the first couple and have really enjoyed it so far.

  4. I’m always on the lookout for tv show recommendations. Goof Girls sounds like an interesting one. I’ll have to add it to my list!

  5. I watched the first season Handmaid’s Tale but couldn’t make it through the rest. I still think it’s better to read the book. Chernobyl is undoubtedly the best program of the year so far.
