Towards the end of last year I was feeling quite frustrated with my home office. Years ago I had purchased a desk from IKEA as I used to work downstairs in the dining room but when I put it in my office it took up a whole wall. I couldn’t even get to the window to open and close it properly.
A new desk
At this point, I knew it was time to do something different and I ordered myself the IKEA Brusali corner desk, knowing that it would fit in the room better and take up so much less space. Really, it was only supposed to go this far but after I swapped the desk I really wanted to have a massive sort out of the room.
This desk didn’t come with storage so I had to buy some boxes from Hobbycraft to put on the shelves and it’s meant that the desk looks quite tidy most of the time. I also had some desktop organisers already so added these to my new space. These have really helped me to keep things close if I use them a lot but to hide bits I don’t use very much.
Reusing old drawers
The original plan was to get rid of my old desk completely. The desk had come with two sets of drawers which went on either side but the new desk didn’t have any real storage at all. I had shoved them into one corner of the room just to get them out of the way but soon realised that they worked really well there. Not only did they mean I had loads of storage but I also had a table for photography.
Photography storage
Although the drawers were great for some things they weren’t very deep and I needed somewhere for my photography props. I had some extra space on this wall so I bought an IKEA Trofast unit and some drawers for it. This means that I have all of my photography props in one place now and they’re all sorted into season too. The space in the middle of this and the other drawers is supposed to be for a filing cabinet but I quite like using it for my photography light now so it can stay up all of the time.
Wall accessories
Although my office has quite fancy looking patterned wallpaper, it’s quite a boring room. I’ve always felt like the walls were really boring and plain somehow. I partnered with Posterlounge recently though and they helped me out with adding some amazing prints to the walls.
I tried to choose something a bit different as usually I would go for dark frames and simple images. I love how light these frames are and the prints are quite inspiring while I’m working.
Not only did I add some great prints to the wall but I wanted something to help keep me more organised too. I wanted somewhere I could pin print outs or lists, as well as somewhere to write down quick ideas or things I needed to do. The pin board and white board were perfect for this and they were really cheap which was great.
Space saving storage
Not only do I use my office for work but I also use it as a storage room. I try to sell a lot of things on Facebook in local selling groups to make a bit of extra money. Not only that, but it saves me throwing things out and stops me from hoarding things we don’t use any more.
This corner of my office is always packed with different things. It’s mostly taken up with Erin’s old clothes, which are organised into sizes, but I also use some of the space for items I’ve been sent for work. It keeps everything sort of tidy and in one place as long as I keep on top of what is there.
Of course, there is always more that you could do to a room but for right now I’m a lot happier working in my office now that I’ve given it a makeover.
