Top 10 things to do in Walt Disney World for first-timers

Before you even get there, booking a holiday to Walt Disney World can be quite overwhelming. There’s so much to think about and so much to do. If you’ve never been before you’ll no doubt wonder where to start once you do get there. Take a look at these top 10 things to do in Walt Disney World for first-timers.

Character Breakfast

Thanks to the pandemic and some services being closed for so long at Disney, character meals can be hard to book nowadays. You have to be right on the ball when your dining booking opens and planning ahead is an absolute must. However, character dining can be such a special experience, especially you are visiting with children. It’s such a good chance to enjoy some interaction with your favourite characters and get some great pictures. Breakfast at ‘Ohana is one of out favourites and it made our own holiday really special.

Fantasmic Show at the Hollywood Studios Park

This is a grand spectacle of characters, special effects and music and it’s going to be making a return in 2022. Your best best is reserving dinner at one of the restaurants where you can also get tickets and a special entrance. Try to sit in the center if you can and go at least a half hour early. Don’t forget a jacket as it can be chilly at night.

Fireworks

The fireworks at Disney parks are something that people talk about for a long time after their visit. Although everyone talks about the fireworks at the Kingdom because yes, they are amazing, you should also not miss the show at Epcot. People find a spot to watch the fireworks quite some time beforehand so be prepared to sit around for a while if you want a good view. It can also get chilly on an evening so be sure to take a jacket with you.

Best rides at Magic Kingdom

These are must not miss rides that even you will love. At Magic Kingdom – Buzz Lightyear; Peter Pan; Winnie the Pooh (this usually has a long line); Dumbo (also, has a long line); Mickey’s Philharmagic (not a ride but a great show); Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor. For older children, Spacemountain and Stitch’s Great Escape.

Best rides at Animal Kingdom

Killimanjaro Safari; Dinosaur (make sure your kid doesn’t scare easily, this one can be very intense but fun); Expedition Everest (also, not for children who scare easily) and Kali Rapid Rivers (bring extra shoes).

Find Mickey shaped food

One of the great things about Walt Disney World is the amount of choice when it comes to food. You’ll find Instagram accounts dedicated to showing off the best Mickey shaped food and where you can find them in the parks. I know when we go I’ll be trying to find a Mickey waffle or pizza!

What to do at Epcot

The Seas with Nemo and Friends (this is a great ride); Spaceship Earth (has been remodeled); Test Track (be prepared to smell like fuel). Also, do not miss visiting all the countries. There are usually shows going on and your kids will love the drummers at China. You must go on the boat rides at both Mexico and Norway and definitely plan on eating there.

See the shows

Each of the Disney parks have different things to do and enjoy and this includes the shows. Make sure you save some time to see at least one, if not more. You could see Fantasmic at Hollywood Studios or maybe The Lion King at Animal Kingdom is more suited to you. They are a great way to get off your feet and be entertained at the same time. It’s always a good idea to arrive early to these shows as they are very popular. It might seem excessive but for some, you should be arriving around 45-60 minutes before the start time.

Visit a Disney resort

You might not be staying at a Disney resort but there’s no reason why you can’t visit one on your holiday. Take some time out from the parks and have a walk around your resort of choice. Each resort has a different theme, such as Animal Kingdom, Yacht Club or Caribbean Beach and there are different things to do and see at each. It would be worthwhile taking a look at the restaurants available at each and maybe pick one to visit based on that.

Disney Springs

Formally known as Downtown Disney, going to Disney Springs to do some shopping is a great thing to do. This is a fun respite from rides and you can shop for souvenirs that you will not have to carry around the park. As well as lots of shops to choose from you’re able to catch a show, see a performance or enjoy a sit down meal or quick bite to eat at one of over 60 different places to choose from. The Rainforest Cafe is a great choice for families.
